Meaning of Water Photo Contest

waterThe ‘Meaning of Water’ photo contest is part of a series of initiatives being launched by the RAI’s Education Outreach Programme to encourage people to creatively engage with anthropology. The contest is being organised in conjunction with the RAI’s ESRC Festival of Social Science event called ‘The Meaning of Water’ taking place in London on March 20th.

The contest aims to:

* promote public engagement with the RAI’s Education Outreach Programme.
* provide a platform for young people to share their work and actively get involved with anthropology (see our previous international anthropology cartoon contest)
* raise awareness of ongoing debates regarding water and sustainability and bring water to the surface of anthropological discussions.

Submissions:

We are looking for photographs of human interaction with water in reference to four thematic categories listed below. Water for this contest can be visualised as liquid, gas, or solid.

The following are suggestions of the kinds of photographs that can be submitted under each theme. They are meant to be illustrative and not restrictive. Applicants are encouraged to be creative in how they communicate these topics.

1.Livelihoods & Sustainability
Photographs could include people using water for their everyday use or in their communities, the use of water for small and large scale production of agriculture, fishing, beverage or other industries.

2.Trade & Transport
Photographs of any transportation on water, or water as a means of exchanging commodities.

3.Management & Access
Photographs which explore issues of access, sanitation, mismanagement, and the economic and power relationships that are linked to water.

4.Religion & Spirituality
Photographs of religious rituals (baptisms, exorcisms, etc.) or holy waters, water with sacred properties or water used in spiritual celebrations.

Who can participate:

This is an international photo competition. It is open to secondary school students, undergraduate and postgraduate anthropology students and anyone with a passion for anthropology and photography, excluding professional photographers.

Guidelines for submissions:

• All applicants must fill in the following registration form for EACH of their submissions.

• Every photograph which is submitted must be have a title and an accompanying text (100-150 words) to be included in the registration form.

• Participants can submit a maximum of two photographs for each of the four categories mentioned above.

• Photographs need to be submitted in high resolution JPEG, TIFF or PNG formats and sized less than 10MB. • Participants must be the copyright holders of the images they submit, or have the permission of the copyright holders to submit their photographs. Submissions which are unethical or disrespectful of anyone or any group of people will not be eligible. Any photographs which have been plagiarized will also not be eligible.

Prize Details: All short-listed and winning contestants will be published on the RAI’s Discover Anthropology website, and other educational materials. In addition,for each thematic category a £25 gift voucher from Amazon will be awarded to the winning photograph

Copyright: The photographers will retain the copyright of their photographs and they will be credited appropriately if they are used on any of our RAI publications.
